AYACUCHO

“Retablos” (Religious Art and Figurines)

The artistic branch of the López family lives on today through Alfredo López Morales, grandson of the much celebrated Great Master, Joaquín López Antay and his most dedicated follower. In the 1940s, Joaquín decided to create new ‘retablos’ with typical scenes on the borders of the usual San Marcos boxes with their saints for protecting the cattle. Following the success of his innovations and albeit it a little late, his sons became his apprentices, learnt the art and began to work in it. Alfredo is the link in the chain that connects the past to the present. He has gained recognition for creation of art using Ayacuchan imagery with his ‘retablos’, crosses, masks, dolls and toys.

Ecological Leather and Embroidery

While they were still at school, Elile and Yuli Torres would play with the scraps of leather left over by their father, a leather tanner, in Ayacucho, using them to make purses which they sold to their friends. This enterprising spirit has stayed with them and their hobby has now become their way of life. “Sumaq Qara”, which means “Embroidering a Life of Opportunities”, works with organized groups of women who have low incomes, are victims of domestic violence or have been displaced by terrorism. In spite of their disadvantages compared to other groups, they demonstrate their creativity and skill by making decorative accessories and clothes.

“Imagery”

Juana MendivilJuana Mendívil was initiated in the art of imagery at the age of 6 in her parents’ workshop. She carries on the Mendívil family legacy together with her husband, Dantón Olarte, who takes care of putting the finishing touches to the work, and it is this attention to detail that makes it stand out. Their work is inspired by the location of their house in the San Blas area, a traditional trading place for llamas, alpacas and vicuñas. By observing the coming and going of our unique camelids, the artists understood that their work must have an authentic Cuzco stamp on it. That is why people are depicted with long necks, inspired by the fauna of the LLAMA KUNKA (long-necked llama) of the Andes.
